Big Clean Up brightens housing estates across Newham

• Residents and council staff join forces to freshen up estates as part of borough-wide cleaning campaign

Residents are joining forces with Newham Council to tidy up housing estates across the borough as part of a two-month Big Clean Up.

Organised by the Council’s Resident Involvement Team, nine Big Clean Up events are uniting residents of all ages with Newham officers and councillors to clear neighbourhoods of rubbish and tidy up communal areas.

One of the latest Big Clean Ups, which took place at Priory Court in Newham’s Boleyn Ward, saw volunteers from partner organisations Thames Water and Barhale on hand to help out by pressure washing hard surfaces, including around a children’s play area.

And residents were also able to discuss particular concerns with members of the Council’s Housing Liaison Team and Repairs Maintenance Service, with additional estate-based surgeries arranged as a result.

Councillor Shaban Mohammed, Cabinet Member for Housing Management and Modernisation, said: “Our residents take great pride in their estates and they know better than anyone the improvements that can really make a difference in helping them to love where they live.

“We’re on a mission to listen to residents and shape our housing service around their priorities. I’ve enjoyed hearing their ideas and seeing their enthusiasm to take part in our Big Clean Ups as we work together to benefit neighbourhoods across Newham.

“Whether you want to come along to a future session or share your ideas on how we can improve estates, please get involved.”

Richard Joseph, Resident Involvement Co-ordinator, said: “We’ve had everyone from older residents to young children who have loved getting involved in the Big Clean Up so far.

“They’ve really enjoyed improving the physical appearance of their estates as well as nurturing a sense of pride and community engagement with their neighbours and representatives from the Council.”

Upcoming Big Clean Ups will take place each Thursday until 28 September 2023, with the exception of Thursday 21 September at the following locations:

  • Thursday 24 August: Biggerstaff Road, E15 2LU
  • Thursday 31 August: Hands Walk, E16 3RA; Russell Road, E16 3QS; Burrard Road, E16 3QL
