Newham celebrated Love Parks Week with hundreds of parks across the country from 28 July to 6 August.
This year we celebrated 7 Green Flag Awards for Newham Parks including a new award for Keir Hardie Recreation Ground pictured here in the spring. Keir Hardie Recreation Ground joins Central Park, Plashet Park, Royal Victoria Gardens, Forest Lane Park, East Ham Nature Reserve and Ghandi Chaplin Memorial Garden that have retained this award for a further year.
Newham’s Parks service is working hard to improve the quality of Newham’s parks. This includes improving biodiversity by introducing wildlife areas such as meadows, tree planting schemes and playground improvements. Each day of Love Parks Week we showcased a different park and highlighted the fantastic front line staff who take care of the parks throughout the year.
You can see the social story hashtag #NewhamParks on Newham’s twitter and Instagram channels at @NewhamLondon and on our new Facebook page.
Councillor James Asser, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainable Transport said:
“Love Parks Week is a great opportunity for everyone to experience the parks and open spaces of Newham.
“Parks are very important and used by many people across the borough and we want to see more and more people using them and discovering their local green spaces.
“A huge amount goes into maintaining our parks and green spaces from our staff and their hard work has ensured that we have won 7 Green Flag Awards this year and they are working to increase that next year and beyond. Thanks to them and the volunteers and community projects that have worked hard over the last year to support our parks.”
Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, said:
“The Love Parks campaign would not be possible without the backing of our local authority partners, including Newham Council, park managers and landowners.
“Newham Love Parks week is an opportunity for everyone to recognise the value of our parks and green spaces for communities, health and wellbeing, and to encourage groups within our communities that may not think of parks as a space for them to visit.”
