- New contractor will begin improvement works to overhaul the current state of the much used community centre
- Retrofit works will also include a number of energy efficient features introduced to future proof the new building
At the latest Cabinet meeting, it was agreed that Olli Construction Ltd, the successful contractor from the tender process, would be awarded the contract to deliver the important improvement works package at Beckton Community Centre.
The overhaul of Beckton Community Centre forms part of wider Council improvement works within the Beckton area aiming to invest back into community buildings with the support of residents to create spaces that will benefit the local communities for the long term.
As part of the £1,498,112 refurbishment works package where general upgrades will be made to the various parts of the building, Olli Construction Ltd will also provide a number of green energy solutions ranging from LED lighting, air source heat pump, roof re-insulation, new double glazed windows and more which will make the retrofitted Beckton Community Centre fit for a greener Newham of the future.
Councillor Zulfiqar Ali, Cabinet member for Finance and Resources said: “The Beckton Community Centre is a much loved old community building that needed significant improvements to make sure that it serves its purpose for residents for not only the short term but for many years to come.
"The council has worked with residents’ support to ensure that the works agreed will create a centre fit and accessible for all with better lighting, easier access to the building for persons with mobility issues, hearing loops for persons hard of hearing and improvements to washrooms.”
The refurbishment of Beckton Community Centre is due to begin in October 2023. During the works, the Council has agreed to provide local groups that use the Beckton Community Centre with access to alternative community spaces to continue their activities with minimum disruptions.
