Keir Hardie Recreation Ground has been awarded the coveted Green Flag Award as it is officially recognised as one of the country’s best parks.
In a record-breaking year, Keir Hardie Recreation Ground is raising its prestigious Green Flag Award, bringing the total number of Newham’s award-winning parks up to seven.
Today, Newham Council’s Parks Service is celebrating after receiving a grant total of seven Green Flag Awards for Keir Hardie Recreation Ground, Central Park, Plashet Park, Forest Lane Park, Royal Victoria Gardens, East Ham Nature Reserve and Ghandi Chaplin Memorial Garden.
The news that Keir Hardie Recreation Ground has achieved accreditation - the international quality mark for parks and green spaces – for the first time is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that cares for the green space so that everyone can enjoy it.
Cllr James Asser, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainable Transport said:
“This is a fantastic achievement, I’m delighted that we have received another new Green Flag award this year and have also successfully retained the award across all six of the existing award-winning parks.
“Our parks are crucial community spaces that provide important access to nature, a place to keep fit, opportunities to connect and participate in events and activities and a place to unwind and relax at the end of a busy week.
“These awards celebrate all of the hard work that goes into providing important places that meet the needs of many people across the borough. I’m very grateful to all the staff and volunteers working so hard to maintain and improve our valuable parks.”
Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd MBE said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved at Keir Hardie Recreation Ground in achieving a Green Flag Award.
“Keir Hardie Recreation Ground, Central Park, Plashet Park, Forest Lane Park, Royal Victoria Gardens, East Ham Nature Reserve and Ghandi Chaplin Memorial Garden are vital green spaces for the community in Newham, bringing people together and providing opportunities to lead healthy lifestyles. The staff and volunteers do so much to ensure that the parks maintain the high standards of the Green Flag Award and everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.”
