• The proposed plans include the creation of a new archive, reading room, exhibition space, digital media area for archive study, classroom, and café.
A full planning application to advance the extensive improvements to the Grade II Listed Canning Town Old Library has now been submitted to the Newham Council planning department. The planning application will be determined over the summer, and if approved, construction is expected to start in Spring of next year.
This exciting project has been the culmination of three years of work in collaboration with the local community, shaped by feedback from residents, businesses, statutory bodies, and voluntary organisations. If approved, the completed building will once again become a valuable civic asset for Canning Town, providing employment and upskilling opportunities for local residents, and enhancing and widening the accessibility of Newham’s collections and heritage material.
The main works will include the creation of a new archive, reading room, exhibition space, digital media area for archive study, classroom, and café. The new building will also be more sustainable and accessible to those with physical disabilities. A lift, disabled parking, floor level changes, access ramps, improvements to windows, doors, and roof lights together with an air source heat pump and solar panels are all planned.
