• Early-bird discount available until 14 July for Selective Licenses, which help raise standards in rented homes
There’s still time for residential landlords in Newham to save themselves hundreds of pounds by applying early for a required licence.
Anyone making a successful application for the Selective Licence by Friday 14 July 2023 will pay an early-bird discount fee of £400 – a saving of £350 on the full price of £750.
Selective licences are required for all residential accommodation that is not a Mandatory or Additional HMO (House in multiple occupation) in every ward in the borough except for Stratford Olympic Park and Royal Victoria.
The latest Selective Licensing scheme started on 1 June 2023 and helps to ensure that privately-rented homes are well managed and of a good standard.

Newham’s last Licensing Scheme, which expired at the end of February 2023, saw 42,000 properties licensed – of which 70 per cent were subject to officer visits or audits.
Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, an average of 800 licensing compliance inspections have been undertaken each month to check on property conditions, safety and management.
From 2018-2022:
- 84 landlords were banned from licensing properties.
- Almost 2,000 breach of licence investigations were conducted and 342 financial penalty final notices were issued, with fines between £5k-£30k.
- 6,447 enforcement letters were sent.
