Lights on bikes

As part of the Romford Road Active Travel scheme, 200 residents have received a free new bike light (valued at just under £100) with smart technology, which can collect data on cycle journeys and help us improve cycle routes near Romford Road.

Romford Road stretches from Stratford to Little Ilford. As well as being a key route for motor vehicles it also provides important west-east links for walking and cycling. The Romford Road Active Travel Scheme seeks to improve walking and cycling routes along Romford Road and to local destinations such as shops, schools and green spaces. We are also looking at changes to the road layout so that bus services run more smoothly in the future.

We are addressing long-standing issues with the quality of pavements and parking on pavements in front of shops as well as improving the general look and feel of Romford Road to make it more desirable and people friendly.

'Lights on Bikes' for residents

In partnership with See.Sense we have given 200 new back lights to residents. These cost just under £100 to buy new and are very bright, making cyclists more visible on the road. They also use smart technology to react to moments of risk by flashing brighter and faster, or adjust brightness to save battery life.

The light can be connected to a smartphone app to collect data on a cyclist’s journey including collisions, near miss incidents, road surface conditions and feedback from cyclists.

This data will be grouped and made anonymous and we will use it to identify where we need to improve roads and connections for cyclists.
