Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz and Councillor Amar Virdee, Cabinet Member for Community Safety said:
“We are devastated that a 14-year girl from our community has tragically died in the fire that broke out in flats in Beckton.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this very difficult and heart-breaking time.
“Council officers continue to assist affected residents and our youth workers are in constant contact with young people in Beckton who are understandably upset by what has happened.
“Council officers will continue to work closely with the emergency services and the police as they continue with investigations following the arrest of a 16-year old young man.
