• Newham Council’s fraud team wins Leadership Award accolade at Public Sector Counter Fraud Awards 2023
The Newham Council fraud team led by Nick Sharp has been recognised for its outstanding work on a national level, winning the much coveted ‘Leadership Award’ at the recent Public Sector Counter Fraud Awards 2023.
The judges were impressed by the team’s meticulous fraud prevention and detection strategy along with their drive and determination to ensure that Newham tackles fraud effectively and protects the public purse.
Councillor Zulfiqar Ali, Cabinet member for Finance and Resources said: “The fraud team’s latest award win is a great testament to the hard work that they put into implementing our zero-tolerance approach to fraud in Newham. Nick’s team investigates all allegations of fraud across the Borough and takes action to protect our residents’ interests. We are extremely pleased to see that their efforts have been recognised.’’
This year, the fraud team has made notional savings of over £3.5m and successfully recovered 32 properties which can now be given to the Newham residents who need them most.
Nicola Wood, Chief Internal Auditor added: “The fraud team has recently achieved a 5-year record which justifies why Nick’s leadership skills have been recognised nationally. A huge well done to the team for all their outstanding work.’’
