• Neighbourhood to be transformed

The regeneration by Newham Council of its Canning Town estates has reached another landmark with planning approval granted on 14 February to deliver 147 affordable homes on vacant land at Vincent Street. It will form Phase 1 of the wider regeneration masterplan, which is being co-designed with local residents to deliver a large amount of family homes along with open spaces, play spaces and energy efficient buildings, all of which will transform the neighbourhood.

The consultation with residents was led by a design team consortium led by architects Jestico + Whiles. Together with project managers Mace, they worked closely with the Canning Town Steering Group and other residents to produce the design.

Hailing this significant landmark, the Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz OBE said: “The Council’s main task in my second term is to get stuff done and done better. This exciting development will create much needed genuinely affordable homes that will help build a fairer Newham – literally in this case. Co-production and co-design is critical to the process and, working closely with the Steering Group and other local residents, a great start is being made.”

The Council is continuing to progress work to procure a contractor to develop the scheme for construction and enable an early start-on-site to deliver these new genuinely affordable homes for our residents.

The Canning Town regeneration project is part of the wider Custom House and Canning Town regeneration area which seeks to create a new neighbourhood, co-designed and co-produced with existing residents, which will deliver a large increase in affordable homes and improve connections to the town centre on Barking Road and to Hallsville Quarter.
