
The Centre for AI in the Public Sector was launched in September 2024 as a partnership between the London Borough of Newham and the University of East London.
The ambition of the centre is to drive innovation to public issues in Newham, identified via the London Borough of Newham, and deliver person-centred solutions, using AI and automation, specifically:

To promote the use of AI in improving services in areas such as temporary accommodation, local economy, social care and climate change mitigation.

To ensure ethical and effective use of AI through robust governance and compliance frameworks.

To contribute significantly to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas such as Arts and Culture, Young People, Sustainability, Health Inequalities, Economic Inequalities and Data Economy/ Cybersecurity.
The Centre for AI will focus on utilising AI in the following critical areas:

Temporary Accommodation: Enhancing the efficiency of temporary housing, prediction modelling and data-services mapping. (First pilot for this has begun)

Local Economy: Using AI to boost local economic development, career opportunities, AI-tech start-ups and support SMEs.

Social Care: Implementing AI solutions to improve the delivery and management of social care services, improve life opportunities and

Climate Change: Developing AI tools to support climate action/just transition plans and sustainability initiatives.

Health Inequalities: Addressing disparities in health outcomes through AI-driven healthcare solutions.

Economic Inequalities: Utilising AI to analyse and mitigate economic disparities within the community.

Data Economy/Cybersecurity: Ensuring data security and leveraging data for economic growth while safeguarding privacy.

Arts and Culture: Promoting the integration of AI in arts and cultural projects to enhance creativity and accessibility.

Young People: Engaging young people in AI initiatives to build future skills and promote inclusive innovation.
