What is Pension Re-enrolment?
Employers are required, under the Pensions Act 2008, to provide a workplace pension scheme to all employees, who meet the age and earnings criteria, to help people save more for their retirement.
The legislation states that all employers must re-enrol all eligible employees into a pension scheme every three years. The aim is to encourage people to save for their retirement so that they have more than just their State Pension to rely on.
Does it affect me?
Yes, if you are not currently in a Newham workplace pension scheme, and;
- Have not opted out of a workplace pension scheme since 1 April 2024.
- Aged 22 or over but under State Pension Age
- Earning at least £10,000 per year
When is it happening?
Newham pension re-enrolment will commence 1 April 2025, anyone who is impacted will receive a letter or email confirming;
- You have been brought into one of Newham's workplace pension schemes (LGPS/NHS/Teachers)
- If you were a 50:50 member within the LGPS you have been enrolled back into the full scheme
What does it mean if I am Re-enrolled?
If you have been moved into one of Newham's workplace pension schemes, you will commence paying pension contributions from your April 2025 salary (pay date 15th April 2025). You will shortly receive further information from the administrators of the relevant pension scheme you have been enrolled into.
If you were paying into the LGPS 50:50 pension scheme you will now be a member of the full LGPS scheme and you will see your Employee pension contributions double.
I don't want to Enrol into a Workplace Pension Scheme
If you do not want to be in a workplace pension scheme, you will need to complete an opt-out form from one of the three pension scheme sites and email it to admin.newhampensions@onesource.co.uk.
Any contributions paid within 3 months of your enrolment can be refunded via your payroll. Any refunds due after 3 months will need to be refunded via the relevant Pension Scheme Administrator.
Please note;
- You cannot opt out in advance of re-enrolment. All requests must be dated from 2 April 2025
- To avoid a deduction made in April you will need to complete and return the opt out form between 2 and 7 April 2025
I want to Remain in the LGPS 50:50 Scheme
If you did not plan to move to the full scheme then you will need to complete a 50:50 election form which can be found on Newham's LGPS administrator's (LPPA) website. Email your completed election form to Payroll.Corporate@oneSource.co.uk.
Please note;
- If you have paid full contributions in April under the LGPS Regulations these contributions cannot be refunded.
- You cannot opt out in advance of re-enrolment. All requests must be dated from 2 April 2025
- To avoid a full scheme LGPS deduction in April you will need to complete and return your election between 2 and 7 April 2025
