As part of our commitment to improve council housing in the borough, we have been carrying out a review of our services to check we are doing everything possible to help keep homes safe and well-maintained.
That review has identified the need to carry out a programme of electrical tests across many of our council properties, so we are meeting our duties as a landlord.
As a landlord we are responsible for carrying out these tests, which are called Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR). While thousands of EICRs have been completed, we will be writing to council tenants to let them know when and if we need to do these tests in their properties. Should you receive one of our letters requesting your home to be tested, please arrange an appointment with the instructions provided within the letter.
While this programme is underway, tenants should continue to take the usual care when using electrical appliances and devices in their homes. Please see our Repairs page to report any concerns Council tenant repairs – Repairs – Newham Council
This programme of work is one part of the wide-ranging actions we are taking to improve our council homes and services to tenants. This has included:
- Local Area Forums
- Damp and Mould Taskforce
- Housing Community Fun Days
- Empowering resident to establish Tenant Resident Association’s
- Resident Scrutiny Panels and Working Groups (Resident Involvement – Newham Council)
- Estate Improvement Visits
- Housing Hubs offering one-stop shop service to residents
To make sure we are getting outside oversight of our work to carry out electrical tests we have referred ourselves to – and will be working closely with - the Regulator for Social Housing (RSH). This independent organisation is responsible for setting standards and driving improvements in the social housing sector.
