Renting a home privately may cost too much for you even if you are working. On this page, you can find out about options to pay less than the market rent and whether you qualify.
Affordable rent
Affordable rents are normally higher than social housing rents, but lower than rents in the private sector.
Affordable rent limits the rent you can be charged up to so it is no more than 80 per cent of what you would pay if you were renting the property from a private landlord.
Who qualifies?
Anyone on our housing waiting list can bid for properties with affordable rent when they become available on the East London Lettings Company website.
Intermediate rent
Intermediate rent allows you to rent a home at a rent that is less than the market rate. It is charged at 80 per cent of what you would expect to pay if you were renting from a private landlord.
Homes to rent at intermediate rent are let by a registered housing provider such as a housing association.
Who qualifies?
To rent a home at intermediate rent, you will need to earn less than the earnings cap set by the housing provider. However, you must be able to able to afford 80% of the local market rent without financial assistance, such as housing benefit.
Some schemes may give priority to applicants living and working in the scheme area.
