National Hate Crime Awareness Week
Come and speak to us at a community event
We are holding events throughout Hate Crime Awareness Week, as we want you to know you are not alone and there is plenty of support available in our borough. We will have stalls in a range of community spaces, with Community Safety and Anti-Social Behaviour teams and local police officers ready to speak to you about your thoughts, concerns and experiences. You will also be able to learn more about what action we are taking, alongside our partners, in order to address hate crime in Newham. Please do join us.
Monday 12 October, 2pm-4pm – Manor Park Library, 685-693 Romford Road, Manor Park, London, E12 5AD
Wednesday 14 October, 10am–11.30am – Shirdi Sai Baba Temple, 298 High Street North, Manor Park, E12 6SA

What a hate crime is
A hate crime is any incident which the victim, or anyone else, thinks is based on someone’s prejudice towards them, because of their:

- Disability
Police statement
One of the things I value most about Newham is its diversity. Our borough brings together people from different backgrounds, cultures, faiths and experiences, and that diversity makes Newham stronger. It is something we should celebrate, protect and be proud of.
That is why I feel so strongly that there is no place for hate crime in our community. No one should be made to feel afraid, isolated or unwelcome because of who they are, what they believe, where they come from, or how they identify.
I understand that for those who experience hate crime, the impact can be deeply personal and long lasting. It can affect confidence, wellbeing and a person's sense of belonging. If you are a victim of hate crime, or witness it, I want you to know that we will listen, we will take your concerns seriously, and we will do everything we can to support you and bring offenders to justice.
The Metropolitan Police Service, my neighbourhood policing teams and I are committed to working closely with residents, community organisations, schools, faith groups and partners across the borough. Building trust, strengthening relationships and ensuring people feel heard are at the heart of what we do. We know that the best way to tackle hate crime is by working together and standing united against intolerance in all its forms
I am proud to serve Newham and the communities who call it home. Together, we can ensure our borough remains a place where everyone feels safe, respected, valued and able to be themselves.
