Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD), observed annually on 27 January, marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and honours the millions who lost their lives during the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur as well as present-day situations around the world and closer to home.
This year’s theme, “For a Better Future,” encourages us to reflect on the lessons of these atrocities and take action to prevent them from recurring. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia, reminding us of the continued importance of remembrance and vigilance.
Newham Council will hold a commemorative event on Monday, 27 January, from 10am to 12noon, at The Old Town Hall Stratford, 29 The Broadway, London E15 4BQ. With performances from Newham Music and local schools, the event will inspire unity and action.
