Serious Violence Crime Strategy
The Serious Violence Duty (SVD) was introduced by the government in the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 and came into effect on January 31, 2023.
Newham's Community Safety Partnership (CSP) is responsible for delivering and implementing the Serious Violence Duty.
The duty imposes several requirements on local areas, including:
- creating a local partnership agreement to lead the duty
- agreeing on what constitutes serious violence
- sharing consistent data and using analytical processes to produce a Strategic Needs Assessment
- developing a Strategy that outlines how the duty will be implemented locally.
The responsible authorities, also known as "duty holders," in the Serious Violence Duty are:
- The police
- Fire and rescue authorities
- Justice organizations (youth offending teams and probation services)
- Health bodies (Integrated Care Boards)
- Local authorities.
