After seven years in the UK, Aurora Cani, was sure that her poor command of English was a real block to coming off benefits, finding paid work and becoming a real part of her local community.

But when a neighbour recommended speaking to Newham council about her problem, the former shop manager from Albania didn’t believe they could help her situation.

But that conversation encouraged her to join an adult education class that has transformed the single mum into a confident English speaker, who has e volunteered in a fundraising event called ‘’ESOL International Day’’ where more than £750 was raised to support Bridges charity and DOST. (local charities)‘’

“My neighbour mentioned there was a council office in the building where I lived and I should just go and talk to them,” Aurora explained. “They were so nice, so helpful.  As I was on benefits I found the classes were free, and I couldn’t believe that it was so easy for me to start doing something for myself. Something that would improve the situation for myself and my daughter.”

Aurora quickly passed through the basic course, taking exams and has moved on to a higher level. She has also now been made class ‘leader; where she helps others who are just at the beginning of their journey to understand key issues around adult education in the borough.

“There are a whole lot of different courses that are now available to me, things like digital marketing, that will help me with employment. At the moment my daughter is too young for me to spend many hours working, but I did help to set up and run an ‘international day’ to attract others to courses which reached 200 people.

“My tutors have helped me every step of the way, encouraging me never to give up – even when its been difficult. My tutor explained that having good language is the first step to doing everything I need to support myself and my daughter in the future. I know that’s true and want to help others understand it too.”

“Thousands of residents have joined our ESOL (English as a Second Language) programme, and most of them have similar stories as Aurora, “said ESOL Curriculum Manager, Laura Iacsa “Most of them have developed their language skills, built confidence, and enhanced their career prospects. At Our Newham Learning and Skills (ONLS), we are dedicated to promoting a strong sense of belonging and community among our residents. Through our ESOL programs, learners not only improve their language abilities and gain confidence but also acquire valuable employability skills that significantly enhance their career opportunities.”
