Keeping safe on our allotment sites

In the event of an emergency, please call 999.

Vandalism, theft and damage

Equipment is left at your own risk, we recommend that you take any expensive tools with you.

If you believe that theft, or any other crime, has been committed on the site, please report this to the police on 101 (the non-emergency number). This helps them monitor and tackle crime in the area. In addition to notifying the police, please let us know so we can take any appropriate action.

Anti-social behaviour

Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated on our allotment sites. All allotment users should be able to attend their plot without fear or harassment. Please report any anti-social behaviour.

Newham Council has zero tolerance for abusive behaviour towards our staff. Our staff are committed to treating everyone with respect. We ask that you show them respect too.

If you behave in an intimidating or violent way to our staff, you may be:

  • Banned from using council facilities and services
  • Prosecuted by the police

No Fires

BBQs or any form of open fire are not permitted in any of our parks and greenspaces, including the allotments. The risk of fire in allotment sites can put people at risk of serious harm and cause catastrophic damage to wildlife and habitats.

We encourage tenants to compost rather than burn materials.

Allotment holder responsibilities

Allotment tenancy agreements and legislation outlines how allotments should be used. The allotment rules below apply to all plot holders and any visitors.

The rules are in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for allotment plot holders and visitors.

Adherence to the rules will dictate whether the plot holder’s annual agreement will be renewed. If tenants fail to follow rules, they may be issued with a notice or will not be allowed to renew their tenancy agreement.

Our rules are under continual review and may be updated/ replaced.

  • Water conservation

The water tanks are shared across the site. Please do not tamper with or damage water tanks and equipment. There are no hosepipes or sprinklers are permitted. Any illegal connections can affect tenancy agreements. We encourage use of water butts where possible.

  • Subletting

Please do not give your key or plot to non-tenants. Allotment plots are non-transferable and cannot be passed down generationally. Friends and family can support, but the named tenant must be present at all times.

  • Rubbish

You are responsible for clearing your own plot and disposing of rubbish. You must not dump/dispose on site or any other plots. If you are a Newham resident, you can dispose of it for free at Jenkins Lane Reuse and Recycling Centre.

  • Paying Others

You must not pay others to maintain your plot and you are not permitted to use your plot for any trade or business (includes selling produce).

  • Inspections

Inspections take place at the end of the growing season and ahead of the renewal period. It is expected that at least 75% of the allotment plot is being used for cultivating (sowing, growing & clearance for planting).

  • Gates and pathways

You are responsible for locking the gate behind you. Please maintain the pathways around your plot and any fences on the boundary.

  • Dogs

Any dogs on the site needs to be kept on a lead at all times.
