A naming ceremony can be a lovely way to celebrate the birth of your new baby, or to welcome an adoptive child into your family.
Design your own baby naming ceremony
Ceremonies can be specially created using your choice of words, poems and readings from a wide selection provided.
The order of the ceremony is:
- A reading
- Naming of the child (or children)
- Parents' promise
- Supporting adults promise
- Signing of the record and closing words.
You can personalise the ceremony even further by adding grandparents' promises, or additional readings from family or friends, or the presentation of a gift.
During the ceremony a souvenir record of the ceremony is signed by the parents, supporting adults and the celebrant.

Who can arrange a baby naming ceremony?
Either parent can make the arrangements to hold a naming ceremony for their child. Arrangements can also be made by legal guardians or anyone who has parental responsibility for a child.
Parents do not have to be married and can come from any cultural background, with any spiritual or religious beliefs.
Will I be able to change my child’s name at the baby naming ceremony?
Neither the naming ceremony nor any document issued as a result of the naming ceremony has legal status. It therefore cannot be used to change your child’s name.
If it is your intention to change your child’s name we recommend you seek further legal advice by contacting a local solicitor or visiting the Citizens Advice Bureau website.
