As Ramadan draws to a close, residents will be getting ready to celebrate Eid al Fitr, the festival that marks the end of Ramadan from Tuesday 9 April.
Eid is usually celebrated with friends, family, special communal prayers and other gatherings.
This year, as in previous years, a number of gatherings are expected to take place across the borough from Tueaday 9 April.
The Council are encouraging all residents to have a safe and happy Eid, please see the details below of where public gatherings are expected to take place.
Gatherings in Green Street between Barking Road and Romford Road
Spontaneous gatherings are expected to take place in and around Green Street from Tuesday 9 April which will make the area very busy.
It may be necessary for the Metropolitan Police to close Green Street if there are large crowds in the area to ensure the safety of our residents. If this closure occurs all traffic, including buses, will need to be diverted. Congestion and delays are possible and we would encourage road users to avoid the area if possible and seek alternative routes.
Residents are being advised to use public transport, to walk or cycle to the location.
Green Street shops will be open as usual and will be selling a range of goods to celebrate Eid, with many of them being specialist South Asian goods and food stores.
Staying Safe
Street stalls are expected. Before purchasing food or drink from any stalls that may be operating, please make sure that the food is being stored and sold in a safe way. Hot food should be kept and served hot, and cold food kept and served cold. If not, the food may not be safe to eat, especially if you have any food allergies.
If possible, buy from a food outlet that you know and not from a stall in the street.
Food Safety Officers and Trading Standards Officers will seize or remove from sale any food or counterfeit goods that are unsafe.
Do not put your own safety at risk by buying food or goods that you are not sure are safe, such as toys or henna products from street sellers.
Please be aware that pickpockets may operate in large crowds and the use of fireworks are not permitted. Community safety enforcement and police patrols in and around the area will be conducted to provide a visible presence and reassurance.
Prayer Gatherings in Newham Parks
Short Eid prayers will take place across a number of parks in Newham.
The gatherings will be observed at a designated area of the parks.
