Sineeta* has spent the last five years helping Newham residents navigate financial challenges, offering advice and support as part of the council's Our Newham Money team. Her mission is simple: to make sure that nobody faces financial hardship alone.
“The cost of living has been rising and many people are struggling to make ends meet,” she explains. “My job is to help them find practical solutions, whether it’s creating a budget, accessing benefits they might be entitled to or offering immediate hardship support.”
One of the first things she does when a resident comes in is review their income and expenses. “We sit down together and take a good look at where the money is coming from and where it’s going,” she says. “Often, people don’t realise how much small changes can make a difference.” After reviewing a resident’s finances, she helps them create a personalised budget plan that fits their needs and goals. But it doesn’t stop there– she works to find long-term solutions that can help ease financial strain over time.
Sineeta knows that benefits can be a lifeline for many families, but she also understands that the system can be confusing. “Many people are entitled to benefits they don’t even know exist,” she explains. “We help residents check what they qualify for and guide them through the application process. It’s about making sure everyone gets the support they’re entitled to.”
Of course, sometimes financial crises can’t wait. “Unexpected things happen– a big bill, a loss of income or an emergency,” she says. “That’s where our hardship support comes in. If someone is in a crisis, struggling to buy food or pay for energy, we assess their situation quickly and may offer one-off payments or vouchers to help cover essential costs. It’s about being there when people need us the most.”
The best part? All of Sineeta’s services are completely free for Newham residents. “There’s no charge for any of the advice or support we offer,” she explains. “Whether it’s by phone, email or in person, we’re here to help. And everything is completely confidential– there’s no judgement, just practical advice to get you through tough times.”
Her role is about more than just offering advice. “We’re part of the community,” she says. “It’s important that people know we’re here for them and that they’re not alone in this. When times are tough, we all play our part– and I’m proud to play mine.”
